Afterthoughts 2 is part of a cycle of chamber music pieces collectively known as Parlor Music, which draw their inspiration from popular music idioms of the first half of the 20th century. Like its predecessor, Afterthoughts 1 for piano trio, this particular work was inspired by the music of the jazz era, particularly the fusion of jazz with the Latin American tango.
