A depiction of the alternating states of frustration and resignation experienced by an impatient driver halted at the traffic lights. This is perhaps the first time a composer has thought to take the phenomenon of road rage as the inspiration for a musical work!
Waiting for the Lights to Change is a depiction in music of the thought-processes that you may – depending on your disposition! – be familiar with if you've been stuck in a vehicle that is stopped at traffic lights. The piece begins with a pounding motif (as of fists against steering wheel) as you pull up at yet another red light. The music then drifts away, with a sense of unravelling optimism, as daydreams begin to come and go. The fist-pounding recurs as the mind intermittently enters the conscious realm only to discover that the lights are still red.
