Stone and Ice combines the forces of two symphony orchestras, and was composed for a concert given by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and New Zealand Sympony Orchestra to be performed alongside two other works for massive orchestra, Berlioz's Symphonie Funèbre et Triomphale and Richard Strauss's Alpine Symphony in the AK03 Festival.
