Paranymphus Adiens was written for the Elmer Iseler Singers and cellist Roman Borys for inclusion on the Elmer Iseler Singers album Puer natus in Bethlehem, Alleluia! (CBC Records), which was recorded under the direction of Lydia Adams and released in 2003. This project aimed to revitalise 12 carols from the collection of plainsong Piae cantiones, compiled in 1582 by the Scandinavian monk Theodoricus.

Hatzis' treatment of Paranymphus Adiens is sensitive to its plainsong origins, with the vocal lines remaining intact while becoming a protracted accompaniment for the soloistic cello role. Touching upon various musical styles throughout, the cello line includes fugal openings, baroque ornaments, melismatic glissandi and, at its most departed, a pseudo-blues 'lick'.

Originally written for female voices, Paranymphus Adiens is accessible to any treble voice type including boy soprano and children's choir.
