The motet was the highest achievement in polyphonic composition in early Western music, the designation being given to a work in which different vocal strands were sung in different languages simultaneously. Rather than evoking medieval polyphony or sacred vocal music, Psathas's Motet is a contemporary reflection upon the idea of the contrapuntal interplay of different "languages".
