Flute Concerto was written for flutist Alexa Still during Ritchie's residency with the Dunedin Sinfonia. The concerto responds to Still's personality and technique, and these qualities are captured in her recording with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Sedares (Koch CD 3-7345-2-H1). Like Carl Nielsen's Flute Concerto, it is a lyrical and quietly searching work that seeks simplicity of life and clarity of conscience. The work has been widely performed, especially in New Zealand and the USA.
