In the 1940s Lilburn began to seek inspiration in the South Island landscape for his musical subject matter. His search resulted in Chaconne, featuring a resonant 16-bar theme and 31 variations. The arch-like design of Chaconne is marked by the symmetrical return of the opening statement at the middle and the end, and Lilburn groups some of the variations in pairs to provide a sense of middle-ground coherence.
