Pruden, the orchestral tutor at Cambridge that year, wrote it for fun, anticipating it would be a hit. The piece is a witty mosaic of incipits from "Double Concerto", "London" Symphony, Beethoven's Symphony No.1 and Mendelssohn's Fingal's Cave, rounded off by the whirr of an electric shaver.
