Oboes, clarinet & basson players: one pencil and one small elephant bell (or something comparable, i.e. Chinese reflex ball) for each player
Perc I/Timp: 4 timpani, 2 suspended cymbals, water gong (with bucket or bowl of water), glockenspiel (to be played on timpani head)
Perc II: 3 suspended cymbals, bamboo chimes, wind chimes, 3 triangles, 1 tam-tam, ratchet, xylophone, bass drum, 1 small tom-tom, water gong (with bucket or bowl of water), 1 brake drum
Solo Percussion, Station 1: 5 octave marimba, vibraphone (with something to hold the pedal down ie brake drum), 4 suspended cymbals, 1 set of wind chimes
Station 2: prepared timpani (3 temple bowls with their bottoms duct taped to the timpani head), 3 suspended cymbals, 2-5 additional metal instruments of performer's choice (surrounding prepared timpani)
Station 3: bass drum, 10 drums in ascending order - any combination of tom-toms, congas, bongos, or drum of choice (ie 4 toms, 4 congas, 2 bongos), optional set of suspended cymbals (1-3 performers choice, to be used in cadenzas)
Str: Violin I [principal only]: a pair of Tingsha chimes (used only at the opening)
Violoncello and Contrabass: one chopstick or pencil per player
