The second of two books of piano works by Carr contains six varied pieces. Nocturne in A minor is a melancholic pas de deux, The Darkening evokes a summer sunset on Waiheke Island, while Poltergeist is a hectice scherzo. As with Book 1, all works have been selected for the Royal Schools alternative ‘C' list piano syllabus. Pastorale, The Darkening and A Legend are suitable for Grade 6, Nocturne in A minor and Poltergeist are suitable for Grade 7, while Seashore has been selected for Grade 8.
Pleasant Pieces, composed in 1992, comprises six short movements in a variety of different styles and moods. The opening Nocturne (borrowed from the composer's ballet suite Promenade) contrasts its calm outer sections with a more passionate middle section. The Darkening presents a rather more ominous picture, while the lively Poltergeist, with its frenetic darting about and occasional dissonant chords, makes an exciting ending to the collection. An interesting and accessible collection of contemporary music for the grade 5-8 player. Accompanying notes by the composer are included.

Throughout his extensive musical output, Edwin Carr demonstrated a consummate craftsmanship and refinement. Regarded as the most cosmopolitan of the elder generation of New Zealand composers, he was particularly noted for his strident opposition to what he felt were attitudes of insular nationalism and intellectual pretension.
