Meditation is inspired by traditional Chinese folk music and poetry, and demonstrates Ritchie's ongoing interest in exploring folk music traditions as a basis for creating new works. The violin part exploits expressive glissandi and high harmonics that recall the sound of the erhu, a bowed Chinese string instrument. Ritchie's use of pentatonic modes and simple melodies throughout the work also evokes this influence.
Anthony Ritchie is a composer based in Dunedin, New Zealand. He is the Series Editor of the University Music Edition New Zealand Series.
