Ross Hendy currently holds the position of Publisher & Managing Director of Promethean Editions Ltd (New Zealand) and Promethean Editions Pty Ltd (Australia).
Ross studied composition at Victoria University of Wellington, graduating with a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus) in 1995. He was a finalist in the 1992 and 1993 student composition competitions, and in 1994 a work of his for string quartet was premiered with enthusiasm by the New Zealand String Quartet. During his time at university, Ross earned an income as a freelance music copyist and engraver. Following his graduation, he formed Mallabar Music (incorporated in 1997), which has since provided music engraving services to a number of international music publishers.
This, combined with his enthusiasm for contemporary music, led naturally to his establishment of Promethean Editions Ltd with infrastructure investor Lloyd Morrison. Initially conceived as a sheet-music publisher of contemporary music, Promethean has evolved to incorporate the promotion of hire catalogues, composer management and copyright administration.
Ross led Promethean Editions' focus on the publication and promotion of unique, cutting-edge works by composers from Australia, Canada, Great Britain and New Zealand. He also launched the Larry Pruden Collected Edition (the first-ever collected edition of works by a New Zealand composer) and later the Douglas Lilburn Edition and the University Music Edition.
Ross travels regularly overseas to establish and maintain international contacts, and he is a frequent visitor to Australia, London and New York.
Ross was formally Executive Producer & CEO of the HRL Morrison Music Trust & Trust Records International Ltd (1999-2013)
The HRL Morrison Music Trust appointed Ross as Executive Producer in 1999 and as CEO in 2000, positions which he held until 2005. The Trust promotes the talents of New Zealand performers and composers through recordings and concerts. Trust Records International Ltd was established in 2003 to showcase the work of the very best international composers and performers. As Executive Producer, Ross has coordinated the production and release of more than 35 recordings. He has also worked to develop offshore markets and in 2003 attended MIDEM in Cannes and recently secured a European distribution agreement with Codaex. Ross established and managed LIVEWIRE (a series of three contemporary music concerts presented in Wellington) on behalf of the Trust.
Ross has been involved with the innovation of a number of arts-related projects and enterprises. Some key projects include working with Morrison Music Company in 1999 and 2000 to establish online CD stores smokecds.com and opuscds.com. In 2001, he presided over the development and implementation of artscalendar.co.nz, the definitive on-line guide to arts events in New Zealand, on behalf of the newly established HRL Morrison Arts Trust. He was contracted as Manager of the New Zealand String Quartet Trust (2005-2006).
Ross was regularly heard as a guest on National Radio’s What’s Going On program and Concert FM’s Upbeat program. In 2001, he was the subject of an hour-long documentary on Concert FM’s An Appointment with... Promethean Editions.
