New Promethean Edition: Percussion Music by Psathas

Dec 10th, 2009

Promethean Editions is pleased to announce the release of Fragment for marimba and vibraphone by John Psathas (PE089). Promethean Editions launched this publication at the 2009 Percussive Arts Society International Conference in Indianapolis, USA with US retailer Steve Weiss Music.

This short work is an adaptation of a piano duet originally composed to commemorate the retirement of the composer?s first piano teacher, Peter Williams. At the time of its composition, Psathas was engaged in writing his double concerto for percussion, piano and orchestra, View From Olympus, and in mood and musical material, Fragment is related to the second movement of that work.

This version, for marimba and vibraphone, was arranged by percussionist Jeremy Fitzsimons. Fitzsimons first performed the work with Kristie Ibrahim, together as Double Lateral, in the Ilott Theatre, Wellington Town Hall, Wellington, New Zealand on 2 October 2005.

Reflecting on the work, Fitzsimons notes: ?Fragment is a refreshing piece to play. It makes me think of water and crystal, like icicles melting in the spring ? you can hear the water dripping from the icy structures. The pure sound of the vibraphone has the opportunity to shine through. It is a joy to play: every note is important.?
