Mike Nock enters Australian Jazz Hall of Fame

May 7th, 2009

On 23 April, pianist and composer Mike Nock was inducted into the Graeme Bell Hall of Fame at the Australian Jazz Bell Awards, hosted by Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Melbourne, Australia.

Informally known as the ?Bell Awards,? in honour of one of Australian?s jazz greats, Graeme Bell, the awards ?recognise and encourage excellence in the performance, creativity, recording and presentation of jazz in Australia? Nock joins six other Australian jazz greats to have entered the hall of fame since the creation of the awards in 2003.

This award is certainly a testament to his extensive career and dedication to contemporary music. Nock continues to perform and compose. Nock?s recently commissioned piano duet Southern Suite, themed around the Soutern Alps, was premiered on 3 May by top New Zealand pianists Michael Houstoun and Diedre Irons at the Festival of Colour, in Wanaka, New Zealand. Nock also featured as both composer and performer with Michael Houstoun in a solo piano concert at the 2009 International Jazz Festival in Wellington, New Zealand, where he performed his own compositions followed by presentations of his work by Houstoun.
